The Age of MR/VR Training: Beyond the Screen
by Clifton Gauthier, VP | July 15, 2025
Mixed and Virtual Reality are not just for gaming anymore. At ROE Defense, we are leveraging these immersive technologies to create hyper-realistic training environments for our warfighters. This is more than just simulation; it's about building muscle memory in complex scenarios that are too dangerous or expensive to replicate in the real world.
For years, military training has relied on a combination of live exercises and screen-based simulations. While valuable, both have their limitations. Live exercises are expensive, logistically complex, and can carry significant risks. Screen-based simulations, on the other hand, often lack the physical immersion needed to build true muscle memory and instinctive reactions.
Mixed Reality (MR) and Virtual Reality (VR) are changing that. By creating fully immersive, 360-degree environments, we can place warfighters in scenarios that are indistinguishable from reality. From clearing a building in a hostile urban environment to coordinating a complex multi-domain operation, MR/VR training allows for repetition and feedback in a controlled, safe setting.
The key is realism. We are not just creating video games. We are building digital twins of real-world locations, incorporating accurate physics, and simulating the physiological and psychological stressors of combat. A soldier can feel the recoil of their weapon, the rumble of a nearby explosion, and the pressure of making split-second decisions with life-or-death consequences.
Furthermore, these virtual environments allow for scenarios that would be impossible to replicate otherwise. We can simulate an attack from a peer adversary with advanced capabilities, a complex cyber-attack on a critical infrastructure node, or a rescue mission in a contested environment. This allows our forces to train for the future fight, not just the last one.
At ROE Defense, our MR/VR division is working hand-in-hand with military subject matter experts to develop training modules that are not only technologically advanced but also doctrinally sound. We are creating a new generation of training tools that will ensure our warfighters are the best prepared in the world. The future of training is here, and it's immersive, adaptable, and incredibly effective.
