AI at the Edge: Intelligent Systems for the Modern Warfighter

by Clifton Gauthier, VP | May 25, 2025

The modern battlefield is a network of connected devices, from soldiers' radios to autonomous drones. To be effective, these devices need to be intelligent. At ROE Defense, we are developing AI and machine learning algorithms that can run on edge devices, enabling real-time decision-making in the most demanding environments.

In the past, artificial intelligence was confined to powerful servers in data centers. But the modern battlefield is a disconnected environment, where access to the cloud is not guaranteed. To be effective, AI needs to be at the edge, running on the devices that our warfighters carry with them into combat.

At ROE Defense, we are pioneering the development of AI and machine learning algorithms that are small enough, fast enough, and efficient enough to run on low-power, resource-constrained edge devices. This is a significant technical challenge, but it is one that we are solving.

Our edge AI capabilities are enabling a new generation of intelligent systems. Drones that can autonomously identify and track targets without a human in the loop. Radios that can intelligently route communications through a contested electromagnetic spectrum. Wearable sensors that can monitor a soldier's vital signs and predict the onset of fatigue or injury.

This is not just about making our systems smarter; it's about making our warfighters more effective. By providing them with real-time, AI-powered insights, we are reducing their cognitive load and allowing them to focus on their mission. We are giving them the tools they need to make better decisions, faster.

The development of edge AI is also a critical component of our commitment to responsible AI. By keeping data processing on the device, we are reducing the risk of data breaches and ensuring that our systems can be used in a way that is consistent with our values.

The future of warfare is intelligent and connected. By bringing AI to the edge, we are ensuring that our warfighters have the intelligent systems they need to dominate the modern battlefield.
